About the Trust
The Astrolabe Community Trust (Trust) has been granted consent to abandon the remains of the MV Rena on Otaiti (Regional Council consent RC67891).
Under the conditions of consent the Trust is required over a ten-year period to undertake significant commitments to monitor, manage and/ or mitigate any future effect in support of an expected, natural recovery of the Reef with the remains of the wreck on it.
The Trust also administers a number of Restoration and Mitigation funds for the purposes of providing for or assisting in a range of environmental, cultural and social projects. The funds will provide for the following communities: Motiti Island; Coastal Te Arawa; Tauranga Moana and the coastal volunteer community of the Bay of Plenty. This includes a contestable fund that will provide for annual research and education scholarships for the duration of the consents.
In fulfilling this purpose, the Trust is responsible for reporting directly to the Bay of Plenty Regional Council.
It will also involve two advisory groups - an Independent Technical Advisory Group (ITAG) and once formed a Kaitiakitanga Reference Group (KRG).
The Trust’s website will publish (once approved and available) the following plans:
Monitoring Plans and Physical Environment Reference Report
The results of all monitoring and sampling being undertaken as part of the above Monitoring Plans, including video records and visual survey reports and summaries of the results
Minutes of the meetings of the Independent Technical Advisory Group (ITAG) and once formed the Kaitiakitanga Reference Group (KRG).
Any reports prepared under the Response and Contingency measures, including any Bay of Plenty Regional Council reports or advice provided
The Wreck Access and Shoreline Debris Management Plans
Annual Reports prepared by the Trust itself.
Any other information reasonably related to the exercise of these consents and the activities of the KRG and the ITAG.
